“VAAYU” – The force of source

Whatever exists in this universe across dimensions, is all regulated by Prana. Our prayer to prana - ‘O Mother Prana’, nourish us as a mother nourishes her children;

with abundance of affluence, intelligence and wisdom.


Prana pervades all aspects of life. Just Like a mother is all protective about her children, Prana protects and promotes our bodily functions, voluntary and involuntary.


A well regulated Prana can make our evolution process excellent. There are 5 types of Prana vaayus and 5 upa-pranas as mentioned in our ancient scriptures, of the Upanishads. Upanishads are the oldest vedic sanatana dharma text of vedic philosophy which are

also scientifically profound. Upanishad could also be defined as absorbing all the knowledge wisdom and spiritual of the gurus with deep sincerity and devotion, where the question gets dissolved and the quest gets fulfilled.

1) Prana Vaayu: We are all governed by a general system fundamentally called prana vaayu, that is the force of life coming from the source of life. 

2) Vyana vaayu: Our heart functions are regulated by Vyana vaayu which is just appropriate to make the heart beat in rhythm to pump out the blood as required in regular intervals for optimum flow. This rhythm and flow supports perpetuity of life.

3) Samaan vaayu: The vaayu which helps us digest the food. By being aware of samaan vaayu one can understand the essence of life and living.

4) Apana vaayu: It is the vaayu which helps us eliminate the toxins and the unwanted waste through our various multimodal circulatory systems. 

5) Udaan vaayu: Udaan vaayu is about awareness of higher subtle energies of our being. When we are entirely composed, integrated, cool, calm and collected; and spaced out completely…from constricted - restricted inhibited beings we become beings of expanded awareness filled with light of divine knowledge. The udaan vaayu rises to the higher realities of life. This takes us to the deepest realization of the nuances of life. Yogis fondly called

this, as process of levitation when it just not the lightness of the being of the mind but the lightness of being in totality. The lightness of being leads you into clarity of seeing!

Of course every Vaayu has its own significance but in particular samaan vaayu and udaan vaayu can be used as tools for liberation and salvation should they be worked upon. Samaan vaayu paves way for udaan vaayu to transcend the barriers of vasana with sadhana. Other than these Pancha Pranas there are Upa Pranas useful for secondary and tertiary functions.

Upa pranas are as listed:


i) Naga: it removes excess gas through the action of burping. Thus the blockages of prana and apana are removed to establish ease of function.

ii) Kurma: It is responsible for blinking of eyes which also prevents dust and foreign bodies from entering into them.

iii) Devdatta: Yawning is a mechanism of easing excess gas typically generated out of eating

complex meals with grains. The complex foods which burden our digestive system which consumes lot of energy causes fatigue and exhaustion.

iv) Krikala: Sneezing and coughing are caused by the stimulation of irritants. It is the reflex mechanism of our body to release these agitated areas.

v) Dhanajaya: Our hearts are regulated by our valves which are responsible for smooth circulation of the blood. A disturbed function of this can cause lot of stress on our hearts.


The five primary vaayus and five upa vaayus can maintain a perfect balance of our health keeping us healthy throughout our lives. Infact all healing processes which move us towards wholeness depend a lot on the functions of these vaayus and upa vaayus.

There are 4 fundamental functions of our breath discipline. Inhalation, retention, exhalation, suspension.

Take a deep breath try and hold it to your comfort level and release it slowly and don’t breathe in for as long as possible, be calm and collected in this suspended state. This will bring about the conditioning of your four functions and when practiced regularly it will cleanse, regulate and fortify your prana.


Prana has to be integrated with every asana whether with breaks or with continuity. In the

process of doing asanas our focus on breath can improve our posture. For being in a posture for an extended time with comfort one need to do a lot of abhyasa. When our abhyasa of asanas becomes our daily way of life our life shows us the way.
